L'Enfant, Pierre-Charles

L'Enfant, Pierre-Charles
(1754-1825)
   architect, engineer
Born in Paris, Pierre-Charles L'Enfant was a student of the Royal Academy of Painting (1771) and, in 1776, went to fight in the American War of Independence. He was promoted to major of the Engineering Corps in 1783. After a sojourn in Paris, he returned to the United States, where he renovated the New York City Hall and was then engaged by George Washington to prepare the plans for the new federal capital (1791). He was dismissed, however, in 1792, for having challenged various private interests, but his plans for the city of Washington, D.C., were, on the whole, retained as the basis for its urban layout. Badly paid for his work, L'Enfant died in poverty.
